Developing Strategy

Owning and living the strategy of the business is key to achieving it. This happy state of affairs only happens when a board takes the time to:

    • set a believable and credible vision that has meaning for anyone who reads it
    • set clear end goals
    • consider the options available and assess them
    • explore potential pitfalls and realisitic scenarios that could delay the strategy
    • think through some triggers that would cause them to review the strategy
    • create an action plan
    • commit themselves to the pursuit of this strategy

This exercise can be short and effective rather than taking months as it can when real world issues prevent everyone spending concentrated time on  thinking. This is usually how "make do and mend" strategies come into being and no one quite commits to what they see as an unrealistic or cynical attempt.
