Managing Global Boards
Managing a Global Board
The key to managing a global Board is to ensure appropriate communication. One of the most difficult aspects of a global Board is the physical locality of each Board member and the constant requirement for Board meetings to be conducted by conference call.
Key Difficulties
- Communication can be misinterpreted when people cannot see each other. Words account for only 7% of human communication and whilst tonality and speech patterns are important much is lost in interpretation by the absence of physical body language
- Boards seldom work as well as a whole team when individuals cannot bond or interact personally
- Managing multi-regulators can provide extra pressures and cause disaster if not handled appropriately
Key Messages for Global Boards
- Where a conference call is necessary the culture norms for each country need to be recognised and reconciled
- The role of Chairman is crucial to ensure everyone has an opportunity to speak and their views respected
- Agree the Standards to use, i.e. which governance standards does the Global Board want to use internationally? It’s important to have a high level agreement with local flexibility
